Biographical Information Ellen Alkon is Professor of Health Services and also Director, Public Health Education in Medicine for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. She has taught local health administration. Dr. Alkon received her BA from Stanford University, MD from the University of Chicago (now Pritzker School of Medicine), and MPH in maternal health from the University of California, Berkeley. She has held leadership positions in three local health departments: Chief of School Health, Anne Arundel County Health Department, Annapolis, Maryland; Director of Maternal and Child Health and Commissioner of Health, Minneapolis Health Department; and various positions in the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services including Medical Director for Public Health, CEO and Medical Director of the Long Beach Comprehensive Health Center, and Public Health Chief, West Area. In her current work, she develops public health aware primary care physicians (see the web page above). Dr Alkon is interested in various administrative areas and has presented papers on various aspects of public health practice including clinic organization, expansion, and integration and public health advocacy.
