Biographical Information
Jonathan Fielding is a Professor of Health Services and Pediatrics. Dr. Fielding serves as Director of Public Health and Health Officer for Los Angeles County where he is responsible for the full range of public health activities for over ten million county residents. Dr. Fielding teaches the Determinants of Health course and participates as faculty lecturer in several other Department courses. He received both his M.D., M.A. (History of Science) and M.P.H. from Harvard University, and his M.B.A. (Finance) from the Wharton School of Business Administration. His areas of expertise include the development of preventive services guidelines and priorities, prevention economics and financing, evidence based public health methods and practice, and health promotion for children, adults and families in community, clinical and occupational settings. As the founding Co-Director of the UCLA Center for Health Enhancement, Education and Research, he helped develop the first comprehensive university-based center to focus on clinical and worksite prevention opportunities. He formerly served as the Founding Board Member, Chairman of the Board and member of the Executive Committee of The California Wellness Foundation, the largest U.S. Foundation devoted to disease prevention and health promotion. Further, he was a founding member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and is Chair, U.S. Community Preventive Services Task Force. He is past President of the American College of Preventive Medicine, Chairman of the Federal Expert Advisory Panel in National Health Objectives for 2020, a member of the National Commission on Prevention Priorities, and was appointed as a member of the Expert Advisory Committee to the California State Department of Public Health. Dr. Fielding’s awards include the Porter Prize, given for his national impact on improving the lives of Americans; The Milton and Ruth Roemer Prize for achievements in local public health, the Sedgwick Medal for contributions to the field of Public Health, and elected membership in the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine. He is the Author of over 175 original scientific articles and chapters, Editor of Annual Review of Public Health, and Associate Editor of the textbook, Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
