BRIEF HISTORY DURING THE SNOW ERA (1813-58)

The Apsley House was built in 1771-8 for the lord chancellor, Henry Brathurst.   The building was designed by Robert Adams.  Brathurst's father had married the daughter of Sir Allen Apsley and Baren Apsley became one of the family titles.  In 1808 the older brother of the Duke of Wellington took over the house's lease.  The Duke of Wellington lived in Apsley House starting in 1816 and became owner in 1820.

In 1947 the Wellington family gave the house to nation and it is now the Wellington Museum.
