BRIEF HISTORY DURING THE SNOW ERA (1813-58)

The square was created in 1835 and named after the Duke of Westminster's estate at Eccleston, Cheshire.  The prominent establishment sculptor, Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey (1781-1841), lived at No. 13 Eccleston Street near the square from 1811 until his death in 1841.  Fifty years after John Snow's death, Winston Churchill lived at No. 33 from 1908-11.
