2003 Breslow Celebration Sparkles with Diamond and Alumni Gems!

On Monday, March 10, 2003 at the UCLA Faculty Center, we will once again celebrate the Lester Breslow Distinguished Lecture and Dinner. This extraordinary evening will feature Jared Diamond, professor of geography and public health, who will discuss "Coca-colonization and Public Health." Always an insightful, thoughtful, and exciting speaker, Dr. Diamond will address the public health crisis created in the Third World as a result of the spread of a westernized life style.

To culminate this special evening of scholarship and friendship, School alumni, faculty, students, and friends will honor eight outstanding alumni for their accomplishments in public health. Selected with care and much discussion by a committee of alumni and faculty, the eight individuals to be inducted into the 2003 Alumni Hall of Fame are:

For Professional Achievement
Harold M. Goldstein, Dr.P.H.
Richard A. Goodman, M.D., J.D., M.P.H.

Shiing-Jer Twu, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D

For Community Service

Announcing a Downtown First: Meet Me at the Cathedral

Especially for Alumni who work downtown
The Program Committee of the Public Health Alumni Association initiates a new series of educational programs in the Los Angeles community on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels (556 West Temple Street, downtown Los Angeles). Its purpose is to connect alumni, especially those who work downtown for this first forum, and other public health professionals with the UCLA School of Public Health and to provide an educational forum for the public health community.

Scheduled over lunchtime, the program, "Getting LA on the Move! Using Health Data to Change Health Policy," will highlight UCLA School of Public Health faculty members, Drs. E. Richard Brown and Antronette Yancey. Both Brown and Yancey will illustrate the use of health data collected by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research (California Health Interview Survey--CHIS, http://www.chis.ucla.edu ) to understand diabetes prevalence, risk, and intervention in LA County and, as a result, to influence change in health policy.

Dean Linda Rosenstock, UCLA School of Public Health, Dr. Thomas L. Garthwaite, Director and Chief Medical Officer, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, and Dr. Jonathan Fielding, Director of Public Health and Health Officer, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, will also be present to greet the attendees.

If you wish to attend, please print the reply card (found by clicking "Public Health Alumni Association Forum" link below the School's logo at http://www.ph.ucla.edu/), fill in the requested information, and return the card by March 19, 2003 to UCLA School of Public Health, Office of Development and Alumni Relations, Box 951772, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1772. You must RSVP to attend.
