2003 Pomp & Circumstance

With joy and excitement in the June air, the School graduated 243 students on Friday, June 13 in Royce Hall. The field of public health can now welcome its most recent professionals with the following degrees: 139 M.P.H.s, 39 M.P.H.s for Health Professionals, 38 M.S.s, 18 Ph.D.s, 2 Dr.P.H.s, and 7 D.Env.s.

Dean Linda Rosenstock welcomed the graduation audience and presented the Dean's Award for sustained and generous support to the Fred H. Bixby Foundation. Mr. John Warren, Fred H. Bixby Foundation Trustee, accepted the award on behalf of the Foundation.

Commencement speaker, Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and infectious disease and public health expert, addressed the graduates and their families and friends, impressing on them that "the new normal" includes emerging infectious diseases such as SARS, West Nile virus, and monkey pox with obesity as the No. 1 health problem in the United States. Furthermore, she stated, "We live in a society that values disease care far more than it values prevention…The time to change that is now."

Christopher Mardesich, J.D., M.P.H.'98, President, Public Health Alumni Association (PHAA), greeted the graduates as the newest alumni and members of the PHAA and spoke of the opportunities their alumni association provides to stay connected to the School as well as for lifelong learning.

PHAA Educational Programs…on the Go!
"Getting LA on the Move! Using Health Data to Change Health Policy" was the first in a series of educational programs to benefit alumni working in various parts of Los Angeles. Held this past March at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, the program featured speakers Drs. E. Richard Brown and Antronette Yancey and drew a spirited lunchtime crowd of alumni and other public health professionals. See the June 2003 Public Health Magazine for details and photos.

Where to next? Under the leadership of Dr. Rosa Pechersky, the PHAA Program Committee will soon begin planning its next program for the new academic year. The committee is interested in hearing from you about locations and topics for this program. Where would you like this event to take place? San Fernando Valley, Long Beach, West Los Angeles, your neighborhood? What topics are you interested in? Please send your ideas to phaa@support.ucla.edu.

Health Policy & Management Alumni Association (HPMAA)

On May 29 HPMAA held its "Leaders of Today…Leaders of Tomorrow" Annual Dinner to honor Carl Weissburg, Esq., Foley & Lardner, and the Class of 2003 from the School's Department of Health Services. Clearly evident at the dinner was the closely-knit alumni network and beneficial relationship that HPMAA has created with Health Services. Proceeds from this fundraiser will provide student scholarships for the department. For highlights and photos of this "grand affair," check http://www.uclahpmaa.org.

Meeting Your Alumni Neighbors and Dr. Diamond

You weren't there at the Breslow Dinner this year? Would you like to view Dr. Diamond's Breslow Lecture and get together with a few alumni neighbors? We will help you organize a small gathering of the School's alumni who live in your neighborhood and provide a video of Dr. Diamond's presentation. If interested, please write publichealth@support.ucla.edu.

Class of '72 Full of Spunk

Don't miss the smiles of those who were present for the Class of '72 Reunion in the June 2003 Public Health Magazine. How many of these alumni can you name?

An Oh! So Special Recognition for Angela Oh, M.P.H. '81

The UCLA Alumni Association honored Angela Oh, '77, M.P.H. '81 (Community Health Sciences) for her professional achievement during this spring's presentation of Alumni Awards. "A distinguished lawyer, scholar, and community activist, Angela Oh unselfishly and generously contributes her time and talents for the enrichment of others and the betterment of her community." Among her public health accomplishments, she has assisted the School of Public Health in facilitating ties between the School and the corporate community in support of the Center for Public Health and Disaster Relief. The School congratulates Ms. Oh on this distinctive recognition by the broad UCLA community.
