If you…
From the Dean's Desk
Finals are over and graduation is here. Excitement is in
the air. On June 18 the School will graduate 262 students. We are proud
to introduce our new public health professionals to the world: 132 M.P.H.s,
48 M.P.H.s for Health Professionals, 43 M.S.s, 30 Ph.D.s, 5 Dr.P.H.s, and
4 D.Env.s.
Dr. America Bracho, executive director of Latino Health Access,
a center for health promotion and disease prevention will be our commencement
speaker. She will speak on the challenges and health risks faced by immigrant
communities and discuss Latino Health Access programs that address multiple
health needs of Latinos in Orange County, California.
Dr. Bracho's remarks will be particularly apt as the School has long recognized
a critical need to address healthcare challenges of immigrant and underserved
populations. As a result, the School has recently created the Center
to Eliminate Health Disparities. The Center will use its findings
to enact health policy at the local, state and federal levels and engage
in advocacy activities to keep the issues of health disparities in the public
and legislative focus. Drs. Roshan Bastani and Antronette Yancey will lead
the Center, made possible by seed support from The California Endowment,
Ralph and Shirley Shapiro and Dean's Advisory Board members Tom Epley and
Linnae Anderson.
I am also pleased to welcome Robert Kaplan, Ph.D. to our
School. An internationally recognized scholar in health sciences, Dr. Kaplan
comes to us from University of California, San Diego School of Medicine
and will become the new chair of the Health Services Department.
Most importantly, I wish to thank all of you who have supported
the School this past year with your contributions. We raised twice as much
as last year for the annual fund due to your generosity. This generosity
translates directly into our support for our students and learning environment,
one of our top fundraising priorities. At a recent Honors and Awards Ceremony,
the students clearly expressed their great appreciation for support received
from our alumni and friends. Thank you.
With warm wishes for a good summer,
Linda Rosenstock, M.D., M.P.H.
Dean
