** 2003 ALUMNI HALL OF FAME **

The School's Alumni Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding alumni in the areas of professional achievement and community service. Last year this special award generated a lot of enthusiasm with a high-achieving group of nine alumni, the first to be inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame (www.ph.ucla.edu/alumni/2002_inductees.html).

To nominate your favorite and most deserving SPH alumnus/a/i for this honor, please submit your nomination(s) by October 30, 2002. The nomination form and instructions are available at www.ph.ucla.edu/alumni/HoF/nominations/
2003_call_for_nominations.html
. Don't be late! A committee of faculty and alumni will review the nominations in November.

2003 Breslow Distinguished Lecture

The School's premier event features Jared Diamond, professor of public health, medicine, and geography, as this year's Breslow Distinguished Lecturer.

Pulitzer Prize winner and author of Guns, Germs, and Steel, Dr. Diamond will speak on "Coca-Colonization and Public Health" on Monday evening, March 10, 2003 at the UCLA Faculty Center. Dr. Diamond will discuss the public health crisis created in the Third World (epidemics of diabetes, hypertension, and other lifestyle-related diseases) as a result of the spread of a westernized lifestyle (coca-colonization). Furthermore, he will suggest an approach to help effected populations modify their behavior before rather than after the epidemics hit them.

The evening will be capped off with awards presented to outstanding alumni in the areas of professional achievement and community service, as these honorees are inducted into the SPH Alumni Hall of Fame (details in the preceding item).

If you wish to receive an invitation, please respond to publichealth@support.ucla.edu with your name, mailing address, and telephone number and include "Breslow Dinner" in the subject line.
