you some of the exciting events we have coming up this fall.
For the second year in a row, student applications to the School have increased by 10 percent. These entering students, now the Class of 2005, are already meeting the educational challenges brought forward by the faculty that include both new and visiting members.

Gloria E. Mao - Assistant Professor In-Residence in Epidemiology
Jack Needleman - Associate Professor in Health Services
Thomas M. Priselac - Adjunct Professor in Health Services
In addition, new visiting professors include:

I am pleased to announce that Dr. E. Richard Brown will receive the 2003 Sedgwick Award
at the American Public Health Association (APHA) this year. The Sedgwick Memorial Medal
for Distinguished Public Health is APHA's oldest and most prestigious award. The
citation notes his roles as past President of APHA, founder/director of our UCLA Center
for Health Policy Research, development of the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS),
and his involvement in advising several U.S. Senators and the White House on health care reform.
And speaking of the APHA Meeting, I hope you will join the School's faculty and your
colleagues in San Francisco and meet us at the UCLA reception (see below). I look
forward to seeing you in person.
With warm regards,
Linda Rosenstock, M.D., M.P.H.

long-lost colleagues and friends from the School.
We are currently compiling an Alumni Directory with the Harris Publishing Company, the

Public Health Alumni Association (PHAA)
A Mission Statement... in Development
The Public Health Alumni Association seeks to build and strengthen personal and professional
connections between the School of Public Health and its current students and alumni. The
Association aims to raise the visibility and profile of the School, thereby increasing its
reputation, value, and involvement within the public health, health care, and local and
international communities. Likewise, the Association strives to increase public health
awareness in the lay community.
To foster these goals, the Association supports and strengthens alumni participation in programs that promote
the School's research, education, and community service. These programs include public health lectures and forums,
networking activities, alumni contributions, and student career and mentoring programs.
For this academic year, PHAA board members and committees are planning activities that will focus on educational programs,
coupled with social time for alumni and held in off-campus locations, and activities to provide career information and alumni
networking opportunities for students.

Ray Goodman Founds the Medical Reserve Corps
Raymond D. Goodman, M.D., M.P.H. '72, is doing it again. Having established
the Breslow Distinguished Lectureship and having helped to found the Public
Health Alumni Association, he has now conceived a new program to enlist
retired physicians and nurses into a Medical Reserve Corps.
After nearly one year of working with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, Goodman is
engaged as the Medical Director of the Medical Reserve Corps of Los Angeles, a unit recognized by the
Office of the Surgeon General of the United States. He is organizing a cadre of public health officials
to train retired physicians and nurses as first responders in the event of a major disaster and assist as
volunteers in public health activities such as mass vaccination programs.
If you wish to participate in this program, you can contact Dr. Goodman at 213-240-8121 or by e-mail at rgoodman@dhs.co.la.ca.us.
