If you…
From the Dean's Desk
On September 30 the School of Public Health had the privilege of addressing
approximately 200 members of the Board of Governors and Board of Councilors
of the UCLA Foundation. In light of our Nation's interest in healthcare,
our presentation focused on access, cost and quality of health care. Joining
me were SPH faculty members Drs. E. Richard Brown, Gerald Kominski
and Jack Needleman who shared their expert analysis as well as
data culled from our own research. From all accounts the presentation was
well received and served as a catalyst for many interesting conversations.
At a recent reception hosted by the School, faculty members had the opportunity
to meet Dr. Sandra Shewry, director of the California Department of Health
Services (DHS). With more than 20 years of experience, Shewry brings to
the position a long history of work in the health care field. We look
forward to continuing to develop relationships with the new leadership
of DHS.
Finally, in late September, Deans Roshan Bastani, Gerald Kominski
and I welcomed the Class of 2006 at student orientation. We are proud
of this incoming group of outstanding students who hail from all over
the United States and countries across the world. You'll have an opportunity
to meet this dynamic group at a mixer in late October – details
below. Hope to see you there!

Wanted: Nominations...2005 Alumni Hall of Fame
The School boasts amazing alumni in all areas of Public Health. In the past
three years, 21 alumni have been elected to the Hall of Fame. This group
barely scratches the surface of the School's alumni who have performed remarkably
in their careers and communities.
Please nominate an alumna or alumnus who has made a significant contribution
to the field of public health. See the School's website at http://www.ph.ucla.edu/alumni_hall.html
for information on how to submit your nomination by Wednesday, October
27, 2004.
Public Health Alumni Association (PHAA)
Connecting alumni with alumni as well as with students and the
School is at the heart of PHAA programming for the coming year. Activities
organized by PHAA will include a mixer for alumni and students (invitation
below), alumni career events for students, and an educational forum on
bioterrorism preparedness hosted with the Department of Health Services,
Los Angeles. Details to follow.
At September's orientation for new students…
PHAA President Christopher Mardesich, JD, MPH '98
greeted the students and suggested they view alumni as a resource to access
information on internships, career directions and jobs. To underscore
this theme, an alumni panel with Kitty Lim, MS '02, Kynna
Wright, MPH '99, Bridget Flores, MPH ‘01 and Vicky Cuevas,
MPH '93, spoke on the influences that the School of Public
Health has had on their careers.

Words from the Newest Alumni
Genus Heidary, MPH '04 and Thomas Cruz, MPH '04
served as co-presidents of the Public Health Student Association (PHSA)
this past academic year. As PHSA leaders, they delivered the Students'
Address at their graduation ceremony in June. Their words were inspiring.
Here are a few excerpts:
Fundamentally, public health is not just about improving societies' health….At
its core, public health is about achieving social justice….[S]ocial
injustices must be remedied through empowering the public through information,
building bridges between communities and public advocates, and when no other
action can be made to change the system where it is broken…..As future
public health leaders, regardless of what discipline we are from, we must
be prepared to take action…. In being public health professionals,
we are fundamentally social advocates…. Our Community, Our Voice,
and Our Future was the motto of our Public Health Student Association at
UCLA. In this spirit of this motto, we look forward to your leadership as
you improve the health and social justice of our community.
