...with information about and for our alumni.
As we begin this academic year, the School of Public Health is poised to launch an important, first-of-its-kind high speed, high volume laboratory network for infectious diseases. Initially funded by the Department of Defense, our efforts were buoyed by a visit from Governor Schwarzenegger who came to UCLA to announce a $9 million grant from the State of California's Office of Homeland Security. Since that announcement in mid-September, we received an additional federal investment of $6 million, bringing the total to $21 million. The new lab initiative will improve the nation and state's ability to make rapid and critically important decisions to save lives in the event of bioterrorist attacks or infectious disease outbreaks. The SPH lab will enable public health experts to track diseases in near real time and dramatically shorten the time needed to produce effective vaccines. We are very excited about this new undertaking of the School and you will hear much more about it in the coming months and years. We were pleased that PHAA President Chris Mardesich, Health Services Alumni Association President Ayako Utsumi and several other alumni joined us for the Governor's announcement. The alumni support of school activities as well as students is critical to our success, so I encourage you to get involved. I look forward to our continued collaboration this year.
With fall in the air, the PHAA is gearing up for another exciting school year. We are again joining with Dean Rosenstock to host the State of the School Address where Alumni and Students will have an opportunity to meet and mingle. Your shared experiences can help enhance the UCLA SPH experience for current students so I encourage you to get involved now. I can assure you that your expertise and time cannot be better spent as we help the school in its important work of training the future leaders of public health. To make certain that students are well positioned and well placed, the school has hired a new Career Services Manager, Arlecia Powell-Halley. She is actively seeking Alumni to get involved in Student Career and Internship nights. I know that schedules are tight, but the value of networking for students is invaluable. Finally, if you are interested in becoming more involved with the PHAA—be it on a committee or as a Board member—please don’t hesitate to email me at phaa@support.ucla.edu. Simply put, we need you. There are numerous ways you can choose to be involved. Please contact me or any of the PHAA leaders to learn how your skills and areas of expertise can enhance the UCLA experience for our current students.
As always, SPH is grateful to its alumni who enrich our school in a myriad of ways including professional services offered, connections made on our behalf, and contributions made in the classroom. Many of you have also chosen to support our School philanthropically, and we’d just like to point to a few highlights of alumni giving in the past year. At this spring’s Student Honors and Awards event held on May 31, two new alumni-sponsored awards were made in support of our students. The $10,000 annual Carolbeth Korn Prize for the most outstanding graduating studentwas established with a $200,000 gift from Mrs. Carolbeth Korn, BS ’59. In addition, many members of the Class of 1972 contributed to the Class of 1972 Reunion Gift Fund in support of the School. Those funds were awarded as student fellowships to two outstanding students in May.
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Raymond Goodman, MPH ’72, recently contributed an additional $100,000 to The Raymond Goodman Scholarship, the first fellowship fund to be endowed by an alumnus of the School. This fund was established in 1976 and will continue to grow and provide even greater support to our students for years and years to come. We would also like to thank the nearly 450 alumni who contributed to the School’s annual fund during 2005-2006. Coupled with an additional 50 friends of the School, $150,000 in discretionary funds were received. The School’s faculty, staff and students are grateful to the many of you who have chosen to strengthen the School’s teaching, research and community service mission. We hope you will respond generously to this year’s annual fund drive as well. As always you can contribute online at any time.
The Career Services Office is planning an exciting and productive year for our students. Your knowledge, connections and resources are essential to our success. We need your help. Among the many activities, we have planned two major Career Events for both Fall (in November) and early Spring (in April) quarters. Please contact me (aphalley@ph.ucla.edu) to discuss your involvement this academic year. I look forward to hearing from you.
