UCLA Reception @ APHA
The annual APHA Meeting has been rescheduled from New Orleans to Philadelphia,
December 10 - 14, 2005. Come and enjoy conversation with colleagues, faculty,
and friends at the UCLA Reception on Monday, December 12, 6:30 - 8:00 pm
at the Philadelphia Marriott, Rooms 303 & 304.
Wanted: Nominations...2006 Alumni Hall
of Fame
Less than two months are left to submit nominations for alumni who have
made substantial and distinctive contributions to the field of Public Health.
In the past four years, the School has celebrated the achievements of 26
remarkable alumni who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and vision
in the field.
To nominate your favorite alumnus/a with distinctive achievements in
the field of public health, please review instructions and download the
nomination form from the School's Hall of Fame page http://www.ph.ucla.edu/alumni_hall.html
(select: "Call for 2006 Nominations"). Please submit
your nomination(s) by December 9, 2005, the new extended deadline.

Announcing New Career Counselor Position at SPH
The School is seeking qualified candidates for this important new position
to support the career counseling of our students and young alumni. Please
distribute this announcement to colleagues who may be qualified and interested
in building this new professional development service for our students and
graduates.
Description: Responsible for developing and coordinating
job opportunities for students and alumni working directly with students
and departments to design a school-wide career counseling office. Provide
employment counseling and career education for School of Public Health
students and alumni. Establish and develop relations with the Public Health
employment community and expand the traditional and non-traditional employment
market scope both substantively and geographically. Build relations with
UCLA Public Health alumni for networking and employment opportunities.
Teach, advise and counsel students including those in graduate levels
in their career development and all phases of the job search process.
Provide individual career counseling regarding all phases of the job search
process to students. Provide in-depth assistance for development and presentation
of workshops and programs regarding career opportunities and job search
skills. Identify and recruit speakers and contacts for career informational
and educational programs. Facilitate and oversee the development of career
planning and placement publications, brochures, handbooks and handouts.
Attend job fairs, and conferences as appropriate.
Qualifications: Knowledge and demonstrated experience
in the career services area, preferably with Graduate students and/or
alumni in Public Health field. Demonstrated counseling abilities and counseling
experience in an academic and/or Public Health environment. Demonstrated
English writing skills to produce concise, logical, and grammatically
correct analytical reports to explain complex policies or issues. Experience
in formal speaking, developing and implementing career-focused workshops,
presentations and conducting training seminars. Proficiency in understanding
Public Health curricula skill sets with focus on how they match with Public
Health careers. Demonstrated relationship-building and communication skills
to interact both within an organization and in dealing with external constituents.
Strong team orientation with demonstrated ability to be flexible and work
as part of a close work team. Demonstrated knowledge of data gathering
and analyses, including the analysis of complex data, information, problems,
situations or procedures to formulate objective conclusions and recognize
alternatives. Demonstrated knowledge of general research in UC systems,
processes and procedures with in depth knowledge of Public Health concepts
and/or Public Health in an academic setting preferred. Ability and experience
in project management and ability to administer programmatic activities
independently. Computer skills needed to maintain all fiscal reporting
and presentation aspects of the program such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Access and email systems with knowledge of webpage design and maintenance.
Continued employment contingent upon completion of satisfactory background
investigation.
