INAUGURAL SOCIAL SCIENCES INITIATIVE (SSI) SYMPOSIUM

On Thursday, October 12 and Friday, October 13 the first annual SSI symposium was held at UCLA.  Over 450 students, faculty and community members attended this event entitled “Social Inequalities and Social Disparities in Los Angeles and Beyond.”  On Friday morning, close to 200 LAUSD high school students joined the audience as well.

Utilizing the “laboratory” of Los Angeles, the symposium revealed insights into the causes and consequences of social inequalities and social disparities.   In addition to many insightful academic presentations by faculty from across UCLA’s campus, the audience was engaged in discussions led by civil rights leaders Dr. Robert Moses and Shanta Driver and Alissa Anderson-Garcia, policy analyst at the California Budget Project.

SSI began through the vision of the Deans of the School of Public Health, Public Affairs, Education and Information Sciences, and the Social Sciences Division of the College of Letters and Science.  Both CEHD Co-Directors are active participants in this important initiative dedicated to the advancement of interdisciplinary scholarship, research, practice and partnership to inform effective and innovative solutions.  Dr. Roshan Bastani, is one of the four lead faculty moving SSI forward and Dr. Toni Yancey is offering one of SSI’s first fiat-lux courses this fall on cultural literacy and community health in addition to being active in the person-focused working group.  In addition to Drs. Bastani and Yancey, CEHD affiliates participating in SSI and the symposium include Dr. Steven Wallace and Dr. Anne Pebley.
