The Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness Research and Training (AANCART) is the first cancer prevention and control research initiative targeted specifically to Asian Americans. The goals of the project are to develop and implement mechanisms for increasing cancer awareness, research, and training among Asian Americans in five target regions (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Hawaii, and Sacramento) where, cumulatively, over 40% of all Asian Americans reside in the United States; to train more Asian American health workers in community cancer prevention; and to formulate and implement grant-funded research that will reduce the burden of cancer among Asian Americans. Los Angeles AANCART, headquartered at UCLA, is part of a cooperative agreement funded by the National Cancer Institute (Moon Chen Jr., Ph.D., MPH, Principal Investigator; University of California, Davis). The mission of this chapter of AANCART is to eliminate cancer disparities in Asian American communities of Los Angeles and Orange Counties (California). Our mission is achieved through our goal of partnering with community-based organizations in reducing cancer disparities among Asian American communities in Los Angeles County and neighboring communities in Southern California, including but not limited to Korean immigrants and colorectal cancer screening.
