Who We Are: Background & Mission

UCLA’s Health and Media Research Group (HMRG) was established in 1997 by the UCLA School of Public Health after recognizing the success of HMRG group founders in their collaborations and community outreach efforts that included a media advocacy campaign for increased immunization messages in broadcast television, development of a middle-school health curriculum, and co-production of numerous educational videos and CD-ROMs. Recognizing the HMRG’s ability to effectively apply public health goals to communication outlets, the UCLA HMRG was established.

The HMRG's mission is to provide formative and summative research support services for media productions, health communication campaigns, and organizations developing their health communication capacity. Focused activities reflect health and science themes to benefit the public at large, as well as special populations. We recognize the creativity and appeal of today's media and value its potential as a resource for lifelong learning, health promotion, and positive social change. Our intention is to enhance the potential of current and developing media formats to reach the population with health and environmental messages and themes.
