How to update McAfee Virus Scan with the latest .DAT files
- Create a directory on your hard drive to save the update file to.
c:\updates would be a good choice.
- Download the latest .DAT files which contain virus signatures for the latest
viruses. In netscape you can hold down the left Shift button on your keyboard, then
click on the filename with your left mouse button. This will bring up a save file
dialog box.

- Click "save" to save the file.
You will need the program pkunzip.exe or a windows-based equivilant such
as WinZip or WinRAR. If you don't have this, download it also, into the
same directory.
- After you have saved the file, you can double-click on it from
within File Manager or Explorer if you have WinZip. If you don't
have a windows program to unzip the file, you will get an error when
you double click on it.
- If you get an error, you will need to go to the MS DOS prompt. In Windows 3.1,
just go to the "Main" program group, then go to the MS DOS icon. In Windows
95 or Windows NT, go to the Start Menu, then choose Programs and MS DOS prompt.
Type cd c:\updates (or whatever you named the directory in the first step), then
type pkunzip <filename> where <filename> is the name
of the update file that you downloaded.
- Now, you will have the files sitting in the directory on your hard drive.
Locate Mcafee Virusscan - common locations are c:\mcvirus, c:\mcafee, c:\program files\mcafee\virusscan.
- Copy all of the .DAT files into that directory.
