Professor Godwin joined the faculty of the School of Public Health in 2006.  She received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1989 and a Ph.D. Physical Chemistry from Stanford University in 1994. She conducted postdoctoral research from 1994-1996 at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Department of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, where she was a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow.  Prior joining the faculty at UCLA, Dr. Godwin was on the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University, where she was an Assistant Professor (1996-2000), Associate Professor (2000-2006), Associate Chair (2003-2004), and Chair (2004-2006) of Chemistry.  Dr. Godwin has received several awards, including a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Toxicology New Investigator Award, and a Camille and Henry Dreyfus New Faculty Award.  She is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor. Dr. Godwin's research focuses on the basic chemical and biological mechanisms by which toxic metal ions affect neurological signaling and development.  Current projects include: (1) determining the effects of lead on gene expression and studying the effects of lead on gene deletion strains in the model organisms S. cerevisiae and P. aeruginosa; (2) studying the biophysical interactions between lead and target proteins; (3) studying the rates and mechanisms of metal exchange in proteins; (4) studying the distribution of toxic metals in urban and rural environments and investigating environmental sources of lead exposure using atomic absorption spectroscopy, ICP-AES, and ICP-MS; (5) developing new methods for detection of lead on surfaces and in cells (in collaboration with Roger Lewis, St. Louis University and Kyle Gee, Molecular Probes/Invitrogen).
