COURSE NUMERIC EVALUATION SCORES Evaluations are made by attending students on the second-to-the-last evening of class during the six-week summer session. Unfortunately, most of the Option 2 students are not present to provide evaluations. Scores of 7-9 are considered good, 4-6 medium, and 1-3 poor.
STUDENT COMMENTS "The class online presentation and access gave me a chance to take the class while I have a full-time job, which is far away from Westwood." - 2007 student "Great class! This course is very interesting and that is due to the excellent way the professor presents the material." - 2007 student "I really enjoyed this class. I had barely heard of EPI before and Dr. Frerichs made me really interested. He is one of my favorite profs at UCLA. His lectures are very thorough. Everything you could need to learn is available. Very well-organized, dedicated to the class. Overall, great prof and great class!" - 2007 student "I am an undergrad neuroscience major and it was so refreshing to have a science class dealing with policy and the "big picture" of medicine that epidemiology offers. You are awesome." - 2007 student "I thought that the professor was organize and was genuinely concerned with students doing well in the course. This was evidenced by his daily emails and thorough review of the difficult material. In general, I don't like math or statistics and have a hard time with it. The professor broke it down into easily understandable concepts (i.e., pictures)." - 2007 student "Loved that all the material from the lectures was available online, making it easy to listen to lectures over again for things missed the first time." - 2006 student "I felt extremely challenged, which is a good thing." - 2006 student "I took the class online. I loved that I had this option [since] I was living outside of LA, and this option saved me a lot of money (rent and gas). Dr. Frerichs was very organized, [and] I loved listening to the lectures." - 2006 student "The professor was very helpful. He tried to have us understand the material. If people stay on top of the readings, they will be fine." - 2006 student "This course is moving too fast, and he [Professor Frerichs] talks fast in class. Sometimes it's hard to digest the material right away. The online lecture recordings really help because I can go back and listen to those if I don't understand the material in class." - 2006 student "Updated website was amazing! No other class I have taken has had that. Great voice, not quiet at all. Very knowledgeable. - 2005 student "Excellent Powerpoint presentations. Makes a lot of the numbers and dense material in epidemiology easier to grasp." - 2005 student Professor Frerichs is a great lecturer. He spends a great amount of time and care to ensure that the presented material is interesting and manageable. I like how much humor he adds to the class with his little examples. I also enjoy "hot headlines" because it brings together current events." - 2005 student "I would recommend a course workbook to supplement the book with additional problems, in order for students to better grasp concepts." [additional questions and answers for each of the textbook chapters were posted, starting in 2006] - 2005 student "When this course began I was a bit nervous because six weeks seemed like such a short tome to learn material usually taught over ten weeks. This [course] has definitely been a whirlwind learning experience, but Dr. Frerichs made it highly enjoyable. His lecture presentations reflect a great deal of care for presenting material in an easy-to-follow, yet entertaining manner, and the web content was an excellent resource. I really can't think of how this course could get any better. Keep up the amazing work." - 2004 student "Professor Frerichs has very good communication skills and [is] concerned with student education. He covered all the material/chapters during summer session (6 weeks long) which is amazing, and kept us interested in the material we were learning. His "hot headlines" were really useful and informative. He is great! - 2004 student "Dr. Frerichs is an excellent instructor and he spends a great amount of time preparing for the class and organizing the Powerpoint slides. He truly cares for everyone to understand the material in class and makes the lectures interesting, even at 6 pm in the evenings." - 2004 student "Professor Frerichs is amazing. I've not been able to attend lectures much [since] I've spent most of my free time doing medical school [?], but his organization of the course has been so great [that] this hasn't been a problem. Whatever he is being paid, it's not enough." - 2004 student |
