Are there Pre-doctoral and Post-doctoral positions in Epidemiology? Is it possible to change faculty advisors? The School recommends that you stay with your current advisor during the first quarter while at UCLA. You may petition to change advisors after the first quarter of enrollment. What is the procedure to change advisors? You need to go to the Student Services Office, 16-071 and request a Blue Petition. You need to obtain both your current advisor's signature and your future advisor. After you obtain both signatures bring the form to the Departmental Student Affairs Officer, room 71-254A. What are the sources of funding available in the Department of Epidemiology? There are many sources of funding in the Department of Epidemiology as well as at the University. Graduate and Postdoctoral Extramural Support also known as GRAPES. This publication lists, by deadline date, extramural fellowships for graduate student an recent postdoctoral fellows, for which announcements have been received in the Graduate Division. You are welcomed to review the brochure that is located on the table right outside 71- 254A next to the student's mailfolders. You may also access the information via the web at http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu. Information on additional extramural funding opportunities exists in the Special Fellowship Office, 1252 Murphy Hall. The annual publication, Graduate Student Support for Continuing Students, will be available to you the end of November. This brochure will be placed in your mailbox as soon as it is sent by the University to the Epidemiology Department. This brochure will give you general information, advise you of university-funded programs, general financial aid and extramural fellowships. APHA Awards are handled by the Department of Epidemiology. Usually the EPI Funding Committee prefers to support those students who will be presenting at APHA. Official notification of funding will be posted in the department giving information on how to apply for this award. Travel Grant Funding is available for students in the School of Public Health. To get an application or further information you may visit the Student Services Office, 16-085 CHS. Special Reader Opportunities. The Department of Epidemiology currently advertises for Special Reader appointments for Epidemiology 100 (Summer, Winter and Spring) and Epidemiology 200A-C (Fall, Winter, Spring). We recommend that students who apply for Special Reader positions be in the doctoral program or be second year master students. This will allow the student to have taken the course and receive a B+ or better. Students interested in Special Reader positions may stop by the Student Affairs Office in the Department of Epidemiology, 71-254A and sign up or send a request via E-mail to jdmiller@ph.ucla.edu. Public Health Traineeship and Unrestricted Fellowships are allocated to epidemiology students based on merit. The EPI Funding Committee reviews each application individually and scores each student based on academic performance the previous year. First reviewed are doctoral students, giving them priority, followed by second year master students. Applications are available in February and usually due in mid- April. Advancement to Candidacy Fellowship (ATC) is money allocated to the Department of Epidemiology to support doctoral students only. Doctoral Students should pick up an application in room 71-254A when they advance to candidacy. This funding is available to support doctoral students working on their dissertation. It is only available for three academic years after advancing to candidacy and the amount of the award is up to the discretion of the Department of Epidemiology Funding Committee. Reduced Nonresident Tuition is available to PhD or professional doctoral candidates who are non-resident for tuition purposes and who have formally advanced to doctoral candidacy are eligible for a 75% reduction of their nonresident tuition. Eligibility for the reduced nonresident tuition begins with the first academic term following advancement to candidacy and ends three calendar years later. Detels and Zhang are PIs to two training programs: The UCLA/USC Pre-Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Molecular Genetic Epidemiology of Cancer and Interdisciplinary Training Program in HIV/AIDS Epidemiology.
