COURSE DESCRIPTION	Click for Sound
This section presents the instructor and content of the class, offered in Summer Session A, 2008 both on the internet (for notebook or desktop reception) and in person.  The course will be taught by Professor Ralph R. Frerichs. On the morning following the lectures, the Powerpoint slides will be posted on the web for enrolled students, along with podcasts of sound files (both mp3 and Windows Media audio).

COURSE OUTLINE (not yet available)

The course outline presents the reading assignment and brief description of each session, along with the quiz and examination schedule.  Each session has a written outline and graphic presentation. The material will be made available to enrolled students as the course unfolds using a web access code (see below).

TESTING OPTIONS

Those enrolled in the course have two testing options.  Option 1 features weekly quizzes on the assigned readings and a final examination, while Option 2 features only a final examination.  Most Option 2 students do not attend the in-class lectures, but rather take the course on the internet.

FINAL EXAMINATION

The final examination is taken in-person at UCLA on July 31, 2008 from either 6:00-8:30 pm (Option 1 -- 80% of grade) or 6:00-9:00 pm (Option 2 -- 100% of grade).

PAST STUDENT EVALUATIONS

Summary evaluation scores are presented for Professor Frerichs (as the instructor) and the Epi 100 course, along with selected written comments by a sample of past students.

COURSE MATERIAL

The course material includes the lecture outlines (to be read before each lecture). the sight and sound lectures, the discussion material (including quiz questions and answers), and past quizzes. Each lecture has a written outline and graphic presentation. The material is available only to enrolled students using a web access code (see below)  An exception is the PDF files of the first day's lectures which are available for open  review.  

WEB ACCESS CODE

Enrolled students will have full access to class room lectures and advising (a TA is available for questions from 5-6 pm prior to class) and to presentations on the internet. A web-access code will be given to enrolled students via email prior to the first session (i.e., before June 24, 2008). The University considers it unethical to share the access code with students not enrolled in EPI 100 Summer Session A, 2008.  A different web-access code will be given to continued enrolled students via email at the beginning of Week 3 (i.e., July 8-10, 2008). 

TEACHING ASSISTANCE

Professor Frerichs will address limited questions in class and discuss the weekly quiz questions on the day following the quiz. The course Teaching Assistant (a doctoral student in Epidemiology) will be available prior to class each day from 5-6 pm to answer individual questions.  Professor Frerichs will be available for individual questions during the break and immediately after each class session.  Email will be used only for administrative purposes, and will not be used to address questions about course concepts or material.

ON-LINE VERSUS IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE

The University charges the same amount, whether the student decides to attend all lectures in person, or to hear and view them on-line.  The option to attend lectures and use the services of the Teaching Assistant remains open to all students, regardless of declared learning style.
