Note: This seminar is intended for epidemiology students in either the second year of the masters program or in the doctoral program.  Students are expected to have already leaned about DALYs from Professor Frerichs in EPI 200B and/or EPI 415.

The methodology seminar in the Fall Quarter will focus on the uses of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), a population-based health measure that is gaining international prominence in the fields of epidemiology, policy and planning, and economics.  The seminar will be conducted by Professor Ralph R. Frerichs on Mondays from 10 to 11:50 am, with student participation, most extensively in the last two sessions.  The course readings, to be posted on the web, will include three excerpts from:

Lopez, AD, Mathers, DC et al. Global Burden of Disease and Risk Factors. Oxford University Press and World Bank, New York and Washington DC, 2006.

Also included are select reference articles (see outline below).
Date Topic
10/01/07 Introduction (YLL and YDL)
10/8/07 Calculating YLL and YDL
10/15/07 Derivation and sensitivity analysis of DALYs (1)
10/2207 Derivation and sensitivity analysis of DALYs (2)
10/29/07 Intra-country comparison: USA
11/5/07 Critical review of DALYs
11/12/07  Veterans Day Holiday
11/19/07 Attributable fractions and DALYs
11/26/07 Student presentations (D [#3], C [#2])
12/3/07 Student presentations  (A [#7], B [#10])

The last two sessions will be devoted to student presentations, featuring a critique of a DALY-using research article, with two presentations on each day.  The class will work on the presentations in teams, with size dependent on enrollment (likely 3-4 students).
