The National Birth Cohort
in Denmark 1996-2004
  • ”Better Health for Mother & Child”

  • A Nationwide prospective study of 100,000 pregnant women
  •   and their children

27

28
Background:

  • Need for large population based studies, especially for gene/environment interaction

  • Good possibility for tracing cohort members

  • Existence of health registers

  • A research register of exposures in intrauterine life and early childhood will increase research options

29
Aims:
  • To study the long and short-term consequences of:

  • Fetal growth and factors that influence fetal growth
  • Infections
  • Diet
  • Medicine
  • Lifestyle/environment
  • and more

"Data"
  • Data:

  • Three types of data are collected:

  • 1) Data on exposures and outcome.
  • Main exposures of interest are:
  • Lifestyle factors, diet, social conditions, infections
  • medications & environmental exposures.
  • 2) Biological data.
  • Mothers and childrens blood samples are
  • stored in a biological bank.
  • 3) Data from existing registers.

"Total number of respondents"
  • Total number of respondents:

33
"Participation in the interviews"
  • Participation in the interviews
  • 53% of the 93,914 children, that reached the age of 18 month, had a mother who completed all 4 interviews:

34
"Participation in blood samples"
  • Participation in blood samples
  • For women who had a live born child we have:

"No biological material may be..."
  • No biological material may be used for purposes that do not comply with the DNBC’s overall aim. Biological material will not be provided for commercial purpose, or for use in analyses where results will not be published.

  • 9)   biological material may in rare cases be given to individuals for clinical purposes.

"Data collection in progress"
  • Data collection in progress:
  • The 7th year ”follow up questionnaire”. A total of 90,000 mothers will be invited to answer questions about their child’s sickness, medication, eating & leisure activities, weight, behaviour, etc.
  • About 3,000 questionnaires have been send. Soon a web-based questionnaire will be launched.
