The director of the UCLA/AITRP, Professor Roger Detels, has worked in the field of HIV/AIDS since 1981 and has published over 145 papers on various aspects of HIV/AIDS. He is also the Principal Investigator for the Los Angeles center of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) which has resulted in the publication of more than 750 research papers. He was the founding director of the UCLA/Fogarty AIDS International Training Research Program and has worked in Asia for over 30 years.

The deputy director of the UCLA/AITRP, Professor Ralph Frerichs, is the chairman of the Department of Epidemiology. He is interested in issues of testing for HIV, training strategies for the web and global communication.

The coordinator for the program is Professor Roberta Malmgren. She provides academic guidance for the trainees in the program. The staff administrator is Ross Arakaki. In addition to providing supportive services for the program, Mr. Arakaki assists the trainees in finding housing and obtaining their visas.
