BRIEF HISTORY DURING THE SNOW ERA (1813-58)

The square takes its name from the 1st Lord Berkeley of Stratton, who built his home here in 1665.  In Snow's time, No. 50 was occupied by George Canning (1770-1827), British politician who served as foreign secretary (1807-1809 and 1822-1827) and became prime minister shortly before his death.
