BRIEF HISTORY DURING THE SNOW ERA (1813-58)

The square was named for the nearby house of the Duke of Gloucester.  Robert Stephenson (seen here), the famous engineer and long-time friend of Charles Empson (Snow's uncle) lived on the square at No. 35 from 1847 when he was elected Member of Parliament until his death in 1859. Stephenson, who was from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, possibly assisted John Snow with financing his early medical courses at Bell's Court in Newcastle-upon-Tyne during his first apprenticeship.
