BRIEF HISTORY DURING THE SNOW ERA (1813-58)

Originally called Cope Castle, the Holland House was built in 1606 for Sir Walter Cope.  Through marriage of a daughter, the house passed to the Earl of Holland in 1624.  In the 1840s, the fourth Baron Holland made considerable renovations and alterations in the house (see figure).  Queen Victoria and Prince Albert attended two of his parties in 1849 and 1850.
