In 1852-3, the Lambeth Water Company moved from its London location at the base of the Hungerford Bridge (see red circle) to Seething Wells, a community up-river above the tidal level.  In the lower left of the map is the town of Teddington, with locks on the River Thames near the divide between often-polluted tidal water (coming upriver from London) and fresh water (flowing downriver towards London).

Legislation encouraged the water companies to relocated above the Teddington locks.  The Lambeth Water Company was the first to comply.  The Chelsea Water Works Company (see yellow circle), employing the same engineer as the Lambeth Water Company, also moved to Seething Wells, but not until 1856.  To view further up river where Seething Wells and Thames Ditton are located, click here.
