Possible cholera case in Moscow

click for Map of Russia

A boy in Moscow has been hospitalized on the suspicion that he may have cholera. The two-year-old came to Moscow with his parents from the city of Kazan, where there has been an outbreak of the disease. The medical authorities in Moscow say the boy has been hospitalized as a precaution.

In Kazan, more than 50 people have been diagnosed with cholera and one man has died. The source of the outbreak was traced to a pond, which has since been drained and treated. Cholera is one of a number of diseases which have resurfaced in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
