A quarter century after the death of John Snow, Teddington Lock was enlarged in 1883.  On a map of 1894, the lock is shown in considerable detail, with London being down river to the left. On the up-river side of the lock is a statement describing the limits of the tidal River Thames. Historically, this was the dividing point between polluted and fresh water.
