Hazardous Substance Training
The threat from hazardous materials is all around. From toxic waste disposal sites, to underground storage tanks, to toxics involved in industrial processes, and even to the dangers of confined spaces -- our workplaces and our environment can be perilous to those without adequate knowledge to recognize, evaluate and control the situation.

Our Courses Include:
CONFINED SPACE -- We offer a variety of levels of Confined Space Courses:
Confined Space Awareness - Level 1 - one day
Confined Space for Managers - Level 2 - one day
Permit Required Confined Space Entry - Level 3 - 2 days
Confined Space Entry and Rescue - Level 4 - 3 days |
CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager) Review (3 days) -- To assist professionals to prepare for the CHMM Exam (offered on campus three times per year). |
Risk Assessment (3 days) -- examines the application of practical risk assessment methods to occupational work tasks. Participants will explore the basic concepts of risk assessment using risk assessment tools to include job hazard and vulnerability analysis with case studies and site visits in operational occupational settings. |
24-hour and 40-hour HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) -- Federal OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and CalOSHA require health and safety training for workers involved in hazardous waste clean-upand emergency response. Training makes workers more aware of the potential hazards they may encounter and provides necessary knowledge and skills to perform their work with minimal risk to their safety and health. We offer this course through UCLA-LOSH. |
8-hour HAZWOPER Refresher -- Hazardous waste workers and supervisors are required to attend an 8-hour refresher annually to retain their certification. We offer this course through UCLA-LOSH. |

Some of our courses are offered in collaboration with the Labor Occupational Safety and Health Program at UCLA (UCLA-LOSH) or the OSHA Training Institute at UC San Diego Extension. |

Participants may access courses in two ways:
Scheduled courses -- attend announced courses offered in Los Angeles and other locations in Region IX (California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, Islands)

Subsidies for Health and Safety Professionals Working for State or Local Government:
NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety ad Health) provides funding to support hazardous substance training for employees of state and local government who are health and safety professionals. We are often able to provide stipends that greatly reduce the cost of eligible courses. Look for the courses listed in green on the Course Schedule. Check with us to inquire about the availability of stipends for particular courses.
