| The UCLA School of Nursing offers a two-year course of graduate study leading to the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.). The curriculum is designed for students to obtain theoretical and practical knowledge of the foundations for specialized practice in Occupational and Environmental Health, as well as an opportunity to implement that knowledge through advanced clinical practice.
The primary aim of the Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing Program within the M.S.N. program at UCLA is to develop advanced practice nurses with an extensive body of occupational health and safety knowledge and a high level of competence in the area of worker health. In their practice, Occupational and Environmental Health Nurses use logic and reason distinguished by intellectual curiosity and individual creativity. Advanced practice nurses in occupational and environmental health apply multidisciplinary theories, including nursing, biologic, behavioral, management, and organization theories as well as content in industrial hygiene and safety to develop, implement, and evaluate models of worker health and quality of occupational health and safety services. They are able to competently assess, diagnose, plan, implement, manage, and evaluate the care of individual workers and groups of workers from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Students elect to do a specialty in one of two areas:
Nursing Administration/Occupational and Environmental Health Specialty
The goal of the nursing administration/occupational and environmental health specialty is to prepare advanced practice nurses for administrative roles within occupational settings. Content includes occupational and environmental health, finance, strategic planning, project management, leadership, quality improvement, risk management, human resource management, management for quality clinical and organizational outcomes, education, and research.
Electives may be taken in the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management, or other schools including Public Health, or Public Policy & Social Research. Practicums with outstanding occupational health administrative leaders are individualized to meet the goals of each student,
and give some practical experience in the administration of occupational health settings. Some courses in this specialty are offered in an online venue as well as on
campus. For information regarding our online courses please go to the http://www.nursing.uclaonline.org site.
Adult Nurse Practitioner, Occupational and Environmental Health Specialty
The occupational and environmental health nursing specialty integrates principles of occupational and environmental health assessment and care with primary ambulatory care of adult groups. Practitioners evaluate the individual as seen within the work setting as well as within the family and community group. Primary focus and emphasis are on health status assessment, health promotion, illness/accident prevention, hazard control, screening, surveillance, and rehabilitation of adult workers. Requirements are met through a combination of courses and experiences specific to the delivery of occupational and environmental health care services.
The Adult Nurse Practitioner, Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing specialty program meets the state and federal guidelines for nurse practitioner preparation. In addition, all graduates of the M.S.N. program are qualified to take national certification examinations in their specialty.
A modified curriculum has been developed for students who are already certified as a nurse practitioner or nurse midwife.
