EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS [top]

The educational program includes training of physicians and others in occupational-environmental medicine. It currently includes the following program's:

OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY:
a two-year in-residence training program for physicians, leading to board eligibility in occupational medicine. Applicants must complete at least a PG-1 year prior to entering this program. The residency emphasizes integration of clinical and public health approaches to occupational-environmental medicine.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM:
special programs are arranged for physicians and others who wish to spend a specified period of time at UCLA learning occupational medicine. The program is jointly operated by the Department of Family Medicine of the School of Medicine and the International Health Program of the School of Public Health.

PRIMARY CARE EDUCATION IN OCCUPATIONAL-ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE:
Pre-doctoral and postdoctoral physician and other trainees receive education and experience in this field.

CORE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM:
employing a two-year cycle, core topics are presented and discussed. At the end of the cycle, participants have had the opportunity to learn about the major areas of occupational medicine.

SERVICE PROGRAMS [top]

UCLA Occupational and Environmental Medicine has major responsibility for occupational health in the Los Angeles area. An on-campus consultation clinic as well as extensive work site consulting service is available. Further, by collaboration with other institutions and agencies, the extent of assistance is increased.

Special expertise in respiratory effects, ergonomics, occupational toxicology, and health services program design is available.

In addition, faculty serve numerous professional and governmental organizations. For example, Dr. Harber is a member of the ACGME committee for preventive medicine and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

RESEARCH [top]

Currently, research activities focus in the following areas:

Occupational Respiratory Morbidity:
For example, we are currently conducting an industrywide exposure assessment and respiratory morbidity study of the carbon black industry. In addition, chronic beryllium disease is studied at this time.

Occupational Mortality Studies:
e.g., study of the relationship of asbestos, SV40 infection, and malignant mesothelioma

Health Services Research:
Application of new service delivery models, particularly primary care based computer assisted interview and recommendation generation, is investigated. In addition, we collaborated with several studies of musculoskeletal disorder treatment.

Computer Systems:
Several projects are developing artificial intelligence/intelligent database approaches to disease recognition and systematic surveillance methodology. This includes the development of knowledge engineering approaches as well as field application trials.

Workers Compensation:
The application of systematic approaches to causation assessment is studied.

Research support at the current time includes funding from National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, National Cancer Institute, Department Of Energy, and private sources.

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY [top]

International activity has significantly increased over the past several years. Collaborative research and educational endeavors have involved activities in United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong over the past two years. From 1997-99, faculty and staff were also associated with the Fogerty Program of the School Public Health, providing collaborative programs in Mexico.
