UCLA PRESENTS FINDINGS OF ENVIRONMENTAL
AND EPIDEMIOLOGICAL RESEARCH STUDIES REGARDING SANTA SUSANA FIELD LABORATORY
TO THE COMMUNITY OF SIMI VALLEY
The UCLA School of Public Health is working with the Santa Susana Field
Laboratory Workgroup to present an informational meeting for the community
members of Simi Valley, CA, to discuss the findings of studies conducted
by University of California, Los Angeles, and University of Michigan environmental
and epidemiological researchers, respectively, as part of the Santa Susana
Field Laboratory (SSFL) Public Health Initiative. The workgroup meeting
will take place on Thursday, February 2, 2006, at the Simi Valley
Cultural Arts Center, Main Stage Theatre, 3050 Los Angeles Avenue, Simi
Valley, from 6:30PM – 10:00PM.
The two researchers will address
ongoing public health investigations of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory
in the Simi Valley community:
- Dr. Yoram Cohen is a Professor
of Chemical Engineering and Director of the UCLA Center for Environmental
Risk Reduction. He will present findings on his (environmental) exposure
pathway study that investigated how contaminants might migrate from
the Santa Susana Field Laboratory to nearby communities.
- Dr. Hal Morgenstern is a
Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the University
of Michigan, School of Public Health. He will be presenting on the incidence
of cancers in the residential population surrounding the Santa Susana
Field Laboratory.
Other discussion topics for
the SSFL Workgroup Meeting will be: (1) Internet access to SSFL environmental
documents, presented by Soil Air Protection Enterprise, and (2) radioactivity
in groundwater at SSFL, presented by the Committee to Bridge the Gap.
All topics will include comments from Workgroup members and the public.
