"The ESE program's multidisciplinary coursework requirements and research training, as well as project management and/or group leadership experiences, prepare the doctoral interns and thus graduates to work towards solving public and environmental challenges in California and globally." Derek Shendell, ESE Student

Academic Program

In their first year ESE students take a series of core and breadth courses in up to twelve different academic departments which participate in the interdepartmental program. In their second year, ESE students work on an applied, interdisciplinary research project (a "Problems Course") with a Program faculty member.

Because the D.Env. is more multidisciplinary than a traditional Ph.D. degree, the Program substitutes a doctoral internship experience in a governmental agency, a national laboratory or the private sector for the traditional extended research training period on campus. D.Env. candidates must nonetheless complete a scholarly research project during their internship that results in a dissertation approved by their UCLA doctoral committee.
