"While the diverse curriculum is quite
challenging, it gives you greater sense of confidence in approaching environmental problems from many different
perspectives." Matthew Vandersande, ESE

Course Work
ESE
students take courses in environmental science, engineering, and policy, law
and management. All students take courses in air pollution, water quality,
applied ecology, environmental toxicology, engineering hydrology, water
quality control systems, environmental policy, and environmental law. In
addition, students take 7-8 breadth courses chosen from the wide variety of
environmental courses offered by UCLA departments such as Atmospheric Sciences,
Biology, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering,
Economics, Environmental Health Sciences, Geography, Policy Studies, Law and
Urban Planning (see table). Students typically devote full time to coursework
during their first year, taking 12 courses, and finish their coursework the
second year.
