Dr. Linwood Pendleton,
Associate Professor, joined UCLA in the Spring of 2004. He received a B.S.
in Biology (with a chemistry minor) from the College of William and Mary, an
M.A. in Biology from Princeton University (for studies in tropical ecology),
a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School of
Government, and a Doctor of Forestry and Environmental Studies in Natural
and Environmental Resource Economics from the School of Forestry and
Environmental Studies at Yale University. Dr. Pendleton was an assistant
professor of Economics, International Relations, and Environmental Studies
at the University of Southern California and an assistant professor of
Economics and Finance at the University of Wyoming.

Current research
Dr. Pendleton’s current research focuses on the economics of environmental
goods and services, especially those in the coastal zone. Dr. Pendleton is
a principal investigator on three projects that all seek to better inform
policymakers about coastal and marine non-market values. These projects are
summarized below.
Southern California Beach Valuation Project.
This research uses dynamic and spatial models to estimate the economic
impact of coastal water pollution in Southern California. In 2001 the team
implemented a year-long telephone panel survey and an exhaustive inventory
of beach attributes for three southern California coastal counties. Now the
team is finalizing a three nested panel random utility model of beach choice
in the face of temporally varying water quality hazards. The research is
joint with Michael Hanemann and Craig Mohn of the University of California
at Berkeley and David Layton of the University of Washington.
Regional Studies of
the Coastal Ocean Observing System. This work, joint with Hauke
Kite-Powell, Charles Colgan, and others attempts to find the potential
economic value of major improvements in the collection, modeling and
dissemination of oceanographic data from remote and local coastal ocean
observing systems. In the current phase of the research, Dr. Pendleton is
examining the economic impact of using improvement in the coastal ocean
observing system to better manage coastal water quality.
National Ocean
Economics Project. This research program, with Judith Kildow and
Charles Colgan, is working to build a system of national economic accounts
to monitor the ecological and economic health of the coastal sector. Dr.
Pendleton is leading the development of theoretical and applied methods to
assess and aggregate national data on the economic values of non-market
coastal goods and services.
In addition, Dr.
Pendleton is working with a consortium of environmental organizations in
British Columbia to determine the economic and financial feasibility of
environmentally sound alternatives to net pen salmon aquaculture.
