During the summer of 2002, I worked at the Guam Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse in Tamuning, Guam as a student intern. My preceptor was Ms. Barbara Benavente, Supervisor in the Prevention and Training Branch. During this internship, I was involved in three projects: (1) The 2002 Swimming and Water Safety Program, which was offered four days a week to 200 children in the community ages 5-14 and staffed by youth leaders ages 15-18. I designed and implemented an impact evaluation with both the parents and the youth staff, and delivered various prevention services and workshops to program participants. (2) I was also involved with the Annual Guam Youth Tobacco Compliance Inspections, where we visited every licensed tobacco vendor on Guam with undercover youth inspectors, to see if they sold tobacco products to minors. I was directly involved in the 2002 inspections as an adult witness/escort and I also entered and analyzed the data collected through SPSS. (3) Through the University of Guam, I researched for appropriate resources about community capacity building in Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the area of tobacco control for a community capacity building grant application.
