Field Placement: Latino Coalition for a Healthy California
Location: Sacramento, CA
Preceptor: Lia Margolis
Student Name: Gisela Gómez
Year: 2002

As a leading voice for Latino health in California, the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California's (LCHC) vision is for Latinos to fully achieve good health, maximize educational attainment, occupational standing, economic strength, environmental, physical and spiritual well being and fully participate in the political process and other societal supporting activities to maintain and enrich their lives and that of future generations. The primary focus of LCHC projects during the summer of 2002 revolved around policy advocacy, specifically AB 982 and AB 1045, and convening state and national experts in the health arena for the LCHC 2002 Conference "Latino Access to Health - When? Cuando?" The conference took place on August 21-23, 2002 in the same city where the LCHC is based, Sacramento, California. In addition to being exposed to both of these projects, I was responsible for initiating the process of reinstating the LCHC Regional Networks throughout the state and helping finalize a report on Latina Teen Pregnancy, subcontracted out to the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at UCLA.
