Reproductive Health Services -- OB/GYN Clinic
Location: UCLA West Medical Building, Los Angeles, CA
Preceptors: Debbie Lam and Alice Dalva
Student Name: Nataliya Zaslavska
Year: 2002
I was doing my project
"Self-Advocacy and Reproductive Health for Women with Disabilities" at University
of California at Los Angeles Sexual and Reproductive Health Services, located
at UCLA West Medical Building, OB/GYN clinic. The project consisted out of two
parts: teaching and research. The whole duration of my internship lasted 11
weeks, from June 17, 2002 till August 30, 2002.
Teaching part involved a week-long educational sessions for women with disabilities lasting 1-1,5 hours a day, covering topics of general health (going to the doctor, recognizing the necessity of seeking medical help), sexual health (sexual choices, sexual life, menstruation, breast exams, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, SDIs, recognizing of the necessity of seeking medical help in this respect) and self-advocacy (communicating with the doctor, making appointments). Curriculum for these classes was preliminary developed by the staff of UCLA Reproductive Health Services. I taught four weeks of classes under the supervision of other educators and independently working with four different groups of women.
Research part of my project consisted of conducting and managing of the research "Reproductive Health of Women with Disabilities", that UCLA Sexual and Reproductive Services conducts together with Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center. I arranged interviews, contacted managers/administrators of group homes, other residential facilities and daycare programs to recruit subjects for our research. I also kept various records and other relevant documentation for our research. Instrumental part of research consisted in conducting interviews, recording data, creating database and doing chart reviews of Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center clients. Totally I have interviewed 15 women.
My other duties as an intern included keeping records from clinical visits and inputting this data into the Clinical Visit Records database for UCLA OB/GYN clinic. I was also doing different information search for the current needs of the clinic as well as fulfilled other office duties.
