Field Placement: The Jubilee Consortium
Location: Hollywood, CA
Preceptor: Dr. Joanne Leslie, member of the Jubilee
Consortium board of directors
Student Name: Kyle Pusateri
Year: 2003
The Jubilee Health Project is a
program of The Jubilee Consortium, a collaborative of Episcopal Churches in
low-income parts of Los Angeles County. While none of the work carried out by
the Jubilee Consortium carries a specifically religious message, all of the
projects carried out by the agency take place in church settings. The agency
was founded in 2001 to serve as a coordinating and administrative body for the
violence prevention, health-promotion, and leadership development work of each
of the individual member churches that form the Jubilee Consortium. Currently
all of the staff positions are part-time, including the Executive Director’s
position. The Jubilee Consortium has a need for interns interested in helping
to expand the financial resources of the agency, and to help implement new and
existing projects at its four parish sites. Current projects at the four sites
include: fitness classes, nutrition education, violence prevention programming,
a summer youth camp, and community gardening. Because the agency is new and
growing, other programmatic areas will be developed in response to community
interests at each of the parish sites.
My internship with the Jubilee Consortium began in the early summer of 2003
and continued until the end of the fall quarter of 2003. Dr. Joanne Leslie,
UCLA SPH Assistant Professor and member of the Jubilee Consortium board of directors,
served as my preceptor. Highlights of the internship include implementing a
pilot youth gardening project, an adult community gardening project, participating
in board meetings and strategic planning sessions with the Executive Director,
and writing a number of grant proposals. The internship was based at the Jubilee
Consortium office at St. Stephen’s church in Hollywood.
