For my summer internship, I worked on the Vietnamese branch of Promoting Access to Health for Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander Women at the Orange County Asian & Pacific Islander Community Alliance. This project was funded due to the disparities in health among the minorities and focused on breast and cervical cancer awareness and screenings. In fact the most common cancer of Vietnamese women is breast cancer and Vietnamese women have the highest incidence of cervical cancer of all racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Unfortunately, this population also has one of the lowest screening rates for both cancers. In addition, there are many myths (i.e. breastfeeding can cause breast cancer) a common in this population as well as lack of knowledge of resources that limit them from attaining better health. A health resource guide was developed and translated with these factors in mind.
