The following report describes Phase I of the dietetic internship portion of the combined-Masters and dietetic internship program at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Greater Los Angeles in conjunction with the University of California, Los Angeles. This year, four interns participated in the internship and completed 400+ hours of Community dietetics including completing Ambulatory rotations, Women’s clinic, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Women, Infants and Children (WIC) rotations, and Home Based Primary Care. Supervisors involved were: Rosslyn Carter-White for Ambulatory, Rachel Ainsley for Women’s clinic, Diane Lucero for Cardiac Rehab, Rhadika Abdula for WIC, and Wallon Hamilton for Home Based Primary Care. The Internship Director was Carrie Johnsen, MPH, RD. Phase I was completed during June 16-September 19, 2003. Home Based Primary Care was completed at the Sepulveda VA site (16111 Plummer Street, North Hills), and the WIC rotation was completed at a WIC site on Van Nuys Blvd, in Van Nuys. All other rotations were completed at the West Los Angeles site of the VA (11301 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles.) The rotations were completed in order to fulfill the national accreditation for dietetic internships that states that all internships must expose interns to Community dietetics as well as clinical and administration. The dietetic internship as a whole is a requirement in order for one to be eligible to sit for the Registered Dietitian’s exam. All internship participants have been selected based on their ranking of desired internships plus the ranking of themselves submitted by those internships. The American Dietetics Association then computer matches a participant to one (1) internship or no offer is made.
