Located in Atlanta, GA, The Office of Women’s Health (OWH) is part of the Office of Director (OD), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). OWH provides a forum for collaboration between agency staff, local women’s health coordinators, other federal agencies, academic institutions, and public and private partners. OWH acts as an advocate for women’s health issues to affect research, programs, and policy. The OWH office includes two public health professionals, a graphic designer, a finance manager, and an administrative assistant.

As an ATPM/CDC intern, I researched and created an educational women’s health booklet, developed strategies and a poster to promote a Women’s Health and Fitness Day Walk, assisted in the development of a magazine for girls, evaluated a girls’ camp visit to the CDC, and presented research findings from three publications to the staff at OWH.

My largest project was developing the women’s health booklet. This booklet was an expansion of the OWH “Tips for a Healthy Life for Women”. The objective was to create a booklet for “any woman”, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, income-level, or health status that differentiated itself from other government publications in its look and feel. I researched the content for the book using the CDC website, organized the content, and then worked with a graphic designer to design the book.

In addition to working on aforementioned projects, I attended the 2004 Minority Women’s Health Summit in Washington, D.C. and the National Conference on Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention in Atlanta, GA and made contacts in other centers/offices at the CDC.
