Project Title: Community Nutrition Dietetic Internship
Field Studies were completed from January 29 to April 22, 2005 at the VA Greater Los Angeles Medical Center in West Los Angeles, the VA Ambulatory Care Center in Downtown Los Angeles, the Northeast Valley Healthcare WIC office in North Hollywood and at multiple locations during National Nutrition Month week and during a “special interest week” rotation. Intern worked 40 hours per week and 400 Field Studies hours were completed in 10 weeks. Purpose of the field studies was to provide experience in the field of public health nutrition as a component of a combined dietetic internship/Master of Public Health program. Field studies experiences included, but were not limited to nutrition evaluation and assessment, integrating didactic knowledge of medical nutrition therapy into individual nutrition counseling, nutrition evaluation and counseling in a home health care setting, specialized nutrition evaluation and counseling for pregnant women and children under 5 years of age, nutrition education for multiple chronic disease states in individual and group settings, teaching weight management classes and planning, implementing and evaluating as well as developing marketing and patient education materials for a week-long program for National Nutrition Month at the VA.
