Field Placement: Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS), Dietetic Internship
Los Angeles, CA
Colleen Ross
Student Name: Sarah DeBolt
Year: 2005

My field study was the community section of the Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) dietetic internship, during Summer 2005. Worksites were at VA clinics and partnering programs throughout the Greater Los Angeles area. Each worksite rotation was under the guidance of a preceptor, however the overall program supervisor is Colleen Ross. The dietetic internship is part of VAGLAHS’ goal to train and educate healthcare workers, who will ultimately improve the health of Americans and veterans. As part of the Food and Nutrition department within GLA, the dietetic interns are trained on all aspects of hospital food and nutrition, from food production to patient nutrition education to administration. The Community Section of the dietetic internship included 7 rotations, which gave me experience in the following community settings: Ambulatory, Women’s Clinic, Cardiac Rehab, Community Staff Relief, Clinical Management, Home Based Primary Care, and Women, Infants, and Children. Each section provided opportunities to work towards the internships objectives.
