Every day, we all benefit from advances in Public Health. From the food we eat, to the health care
we receive, to the safer conditions in which we work, we are living longer, healthier lives than
generations before us...and we have Public Health to thank.
The Public Health Legacy
Public Health is the science that joins experts from many disciplines to tackle the daunting
health challenges faced by whole communities. Public Health prevents disease and disability, promotes healthy
behaviors in individuals and populations, and advances high-quality, cost-effective health care.
Among the Public Health issues that touch us all are...
- Ensuring clean air and water and safe food
- Providing safe and healthy workplaces
- Preventing chronic and infectious disease
- Minimizing domestic, school, and community violence
- Promoting healthy lifestyles
- Improving healthcare delivery
- Preventing and responding to intentional and natural disasters
Public Health Professionals at Work
Public health professionals work in the public, private, and non-profit sectors to help ensure the health of
communities. Their work includes...
- Educating future Public Health professionals
- Conducting life-saving research
- Advocating for informed health policy
- Providing expertise on a local, national, and global basis
- Designing and implementing programs that help save lives and improve the public's health both at home and abroad.
Public Health...More Than Medicine
While Public Health and Medicine share areas of study and research, Medicine treats one person at a time
while Public Health works in populations to prevent disease and injury to millions at a time.
UCLA...The Ideal Place
The UCLA campus offers the perfect environment for our premier School of Public Health with its abundant
opportunities for vital cross-disciplinary collaborations. An integral component of UCLA's world-renowned
health sciences complex, the School also benefits by increasing partnerships with UCLA's top law and
management schools; a vital public affairs school; new cross-campus initiatives in biosciences and global
studies; and dedicated biomolecular, genetic, environmental and other science teaching and research facilities.
The School is further enriched by its location in one of the world's most culturally, economically and commercially
diverse regions.
Private Support is Now More Important Than Ever
UCLA has been a leader in Public Health training and research for more than 60 years. Today the UCLA School of
Public Health consistently ranks among the top 10 of such schools in the nation. The knowledge created here has
made a profound impact in our ability to tackle critical public health issues such as infectious
diseases, obesity and bioterrorist threats. But much more must be done to
prevent disease and promote health in our communities.
With less than 20% of expenditures now offset by the State of California, UCLA can no longer rely on public resources
to fulfill its academic and research missions. Only through a combination of public and private support
can the School build upon its excellence as we continue to face Public Health challenges unimagined even a few short
decades ago.
Funding Priorities
The School of Public Health has identified four key areas in which your support will help shape future educational and
research opportunities: Faculty Excellence, Student
Excellence, Research Initiatives, Information
Technology.
Your generous gift to the UCLA School of Public Health will help save lives and ensure a healthier future for millions.
