Fred Hagigi
is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Services.
He is the Director of the Executive Education Programs in Healthcare
Management & Policy and the EMPH Program.
In 2007, he received the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award from
the UCLA Academic Senate on Teaching, and in 2005 he received
the Public Health Student Association Distinguished Teaching
Award. Dr. Hagigi teaches Healthcare Financial Accounting, Financial
Management, and Applied Field Project / Consulting. He has taught
courses in healthcare marketing and healthcare quality improvement
at UCLA, and courses in operations management and consulting
at The University of Utah’s Schools of Business and Engineering.
He has lectured at various national and international meetings
on healthcare systems and delivery. He currently lectures and
consults with international delegates who are visiting Los Angeles
to learn about the U.S. Healthcare system and curriculum development
in healthcare management.
He received
a B.S. in Industrial Engineering & Management and a B.S.
in Finance from The University of Utah, and received an MBA
in International Business and Finance from Texas A&M. He
received his MPH and DrPH in Healthcare Management & Policy
from UCLA’s School of Public Health, with a Marketing
Strategy cognate at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management.
Prior to joining UCLA’s faculty in 1998, he consulted
with private and governmental organizations for over 25 years,
including projects with DOE, SBA, Commerce, Utah Division of
Corrections, Utah Economic Development, LA County Health Services,
and VA Healthcare. He has also consulted with multi-specialty
medical groups, IPAs, and Managed Care Organizations.
His current
consulting project with the Veterans Administration concentrates
on translating research into practice and demonstrating the
business case for increased healthcare quality. As a consultant
with the Management Development Institute at UCLA’s Anderson
School, he developed the financial component of a curriculum
on building the management capacity of NGOs, work that is supported
by Johnson & Johnson. He taught financial management to
representatives from eleven African nations in Kenya. His primary
research focuses on marketing strategies within public and private
organizations, healthcare delivery system analyses, and organizational
performance measurements. He is a Senior Member of the Institute
of Industrial Engineers and a Certified Management Consultant.
