Susan L. Ettner is Professor
in the Department of Health Services and the Division of General
Internal Medicine and Health Services Research in the Department
of Medicine, UCLA School of Medicine. She obtained her Ph.D.
in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr.
Ettner’s research interests include reciprocity in the relationship
between health and labor market outcomes, mental health and
substance abuse services, insurance markets and managed care,
and chronic disability, post-acute and long-term care. Dr. Ettner
has received research funding from NIMH to analyze administrative
and survey data to examine the role of patient, provider and
market characteristics in determining the psychiatric treatment
patterns and outcomes of elderly and disabled Medicare beneficiaries.
A few of her other current projects are studies of risk adjustment
of behavioral health care costs and outcomes; the impact of
mental and physical health on labor market outcomes; mediating
factors in the SES and health relationship; the cost-effectiveness
of integrated primary care interventions on the cost and outcomes
of triply diagnosed HIV+ patients; the impact of managed care
on the substance abuse treatment patterns and outcomes of Medicaid
beneficiaries; and the relationship between somatization and
inappropriate utilization in primary care settings.
