Developing the proposal is an important preliminary preparation for the consulting report. The proposal is the plan of action, specifying what is to be done, and how it will be done (including a timeline). It is the first sketch of a strategy and the procedures to be used to solve an identified problem. This proposalis also the agreement between the student and the preceptor for agreed-upon work and product. It is most likely the basis for the consulting report due in the Fall.
Both student and preceptor need to sign the proposal, indicating acceptance of the work plan for your particular project. Please email your proposal to Dr. Vriesman at vriesman@ucla.edu by the 4th week of the Summer Internship or no later than mid-August.
The proposal demonstrates that the student has a clear picture of the potential project, the steps to conduct the project, and a sense of the analytical requirements. The proposal will:
1. Improve the student's ability to critically define an organizational or research problem; 2. Foster the student's understanding of organizational issues and managerial problem-solving; 3. Prepare the student for similar tasks after graduation; and, enhance the student's professional self-esteem. The proposal should be in 12 pt. Font, double-spaced, have 1" margins, a title, be no more than 5-6 pages (+ bib) and consist of the following components:
1. Introduction
Briefly introduce the site and the organization, indicating that you are familiar with them.
2. Statement and Background of the Problem
Identify an issue important to the organization and feasible to analyze, given the time and resource constraints. Provide an overview of the problem in no more than two paragraphs. Identify why this project is important to the organization.
3. Literature Review
This should address the background information, analytical or conceptual frameworks and methodological issues. Only those articles that have a direct bearing on the project should be included.
4. Objectives and Methodology of the Project
Select and briefly describe the objectives of the project and the methods or tasks required to complete the project, such as techniques used to solve the problem, required data, or analytical methods.
5. Preceptor's criteria for acceptance and approval
Specify who will use the final project report or who will receive the services, products, or processes developed
6. Time and Task Chart
Prepare a Gantt chart listing the order of the tasks, the length of time to complete each task and the expected completion date. Include any constraints or priorities that might impact the deadlines or interim products. Please include all appropriate milestones and interim deliverables.
7. Bibliography
Prepare a biblipgraphy that is consistent and complete. Bibliographies require correct bibliographic format. Any of the formats for medical, biological, or social sciences would be appropriate.
