The materials found at this website are publications of the Department of Community Health Sciences and the Comprehensive Community-based STD-HIV/AIDS Research Project, funded by grant number RO1-A133845 from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases of the U.S. Public Health Service. The booklets, known as photonovellas, contain educational and informational materials about STD prevention activities among the Philippines’s more vulnerable populations such as taxi drivers, factory workers, military personnel and other high-risk communities. In addition to the photonovellas, posters and stickers were published with the intent to serve as both prevention and intervention tools. Each photonovella was published in one of two Filipino dialects, Tagalog and Cebuano, with an equivalent translation to English. The photonovellas were produced in association with local health agencies or educational institutions in an effort to educate Filipinos about STDs. These are examples of programs directed specifically toward different ethnic groups that are socially and culturally sensitive to STD risk behaviors. This website should be used as an educational tool for any individual interested in STD/HIV/AIDS prevention in the national or international arena.

The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is part of the School of Public Health at UCLA. CHS is a multidisciplinary department that draws from many fields of study including the social sciences, medicine, behavioral sciences, and health education.

These materials were developed in cooperation with faculty from the University of the Philippines, College of Public Health (Teodora V. Tiglao), Research Manager (Charlie T. Mendoza) and Site Coordinators (Dorcas Romen, Grace Carungay, Angelica Mallari and Mildred Publico) and Peer Counselors from the participating study sites in the Philippines.
